A Beautiful Weekend in Beantown: Boston, MA

Boston is a wonderful city to visit! I went for the first time in 2021 to visit Harvard after my fellowship interview there and also to see Miyavi in concert – it was the end of October so it was cold! This time around we visited our cousin Anuja in the middle of Summer and the weather was amazing. It was easy to get around the main city area and on foot and to nearby neighborhoods by the subway, referred to as the “T.” Here is how to spend a beautiful weekend in Boston.

Breweries

There is no shortage of breweries to visit in Boston. Tree House Brewing company in Tewksbury gives giant cabin vibes and is situated on a golf course.

The Trillium brewery in Canton was large with more modern-industrial vibes. Their pizza was delicious, especially their unique squash pizza!

I had saved Farthest Star Sake on my Boston Google Maps list a while ago and am so glad we got to go check it out! It is the only sake brewery of its kind in the Northeast and one of less than 50 sake breweries outside of Japan. Being there reminded me of our one-of-a-kind experience at Gekkeikan Sake Brewery in Kyoto, Japan. Our experience at Farthest Star was complete with a sake flight, a vending machine filled with Japanese snacks, and a few rounds of Connect 4!

Somerville

Most of the amazing food options are locations in Somerville. Boonnoon Market is one of the most authentic Thai spots according to Anuja who actually lived in Thailand years ago. This is where I was introduced to the Thai dish Kao Soi for the first time. We then ate way too much ice cream at the nearby Scoops, but check out Christina’s Homemade Ice Cream for more funky flavor options.

Strolling along the Somerville Community Path on the way to any of these food spots in the area, you’ll see quirky roadside art.

3 Little Figs is a sweet little cafe with great drinks and sandwiches (even a Just Egg vegan sandwich with a savory harissa oil). This is where I had London Fog #1 of the day!

Masala Square Open late Indian food, really tasty with good flavors that hit the spot. We had the pakoras, saag paneer, and paneer tikka with naan and they did not disappoint. They also have an Indian-themed drink menu.

Tasty Momo Nepalese cuisine was by far the best food I had during my weekend in Boston. The flavors were rich and the spice level was amazing. The chow mein and momos were to die for, and the cherry on top was the pani puri!

Boston Common

Boston Common is a giant park area with beautiful topiary, a cute frog pond, a lake, and various public art installations.

These various painted cows were on display throughout the city at the time of our visit to honor 75 years of research and advancement made in cancer research from the support of the Jimmy Fund.

Newbury Street

Continuing West from Boston Common is a long stretch of some of the best shops on Newbury Street.

We discovered Johnny Cupcakes which is by no means a bakery but rather a cool art store with T-shirts, cards, stickers, and other edgy novelty art items.

There was even the tiniest Harry Potter store!

Another great spot for a vegan brunch in Boston is The Friendly Toast not far off Newbury, which I visited in 2021 at the best time (Halloween weekend!).

Fenway & MFA

The historic Fenway Park is located in the middle of the city. They only do tours in the mornings, otherwise not able to see the park from the inside.

The Museum of Fine Arts is a must-visit, time permitting. Their collection is some of the best I’ve seen complete with several Van Gogh’s including Lullaby: Madame Augustine Roulin Rocking a Cradle and Postman Joseph Roulin.

Time Out Market Boston is a refined food hall with a wide array of food stalls. This included Mexican by Taqueria El Barrio, sushi tacos and bowls by Gogo Ya, and Mediterranean delights by Anoush’ella.

I so appreciate Blackbird Doughnuts’ multiple delicious vegan donut options! Their donuts are quite dense but still have a fluffy and flakey textture.

Government Center

Visit the copkiller slide at Government Center, followed by the cute indoor Boston Public Market. London Fog #2 of the day came from Soluna Garden Tea in the market.

Government Center is a nice metropolitan area to walk around – find the rainbow Boston sign!

East Boston

There was a long line for Tall Ship so we skipped it, but check it out if you want to hang out on boat! We sat and admired the West side of the city from across the harbor instead. ICA Watershed on this side of town is an art gallery also worth checking out for its unique installations, sadly it closed before we could arrive.

Downtown

Versus Arcade bar had fun games and geek vibes. We played pinball, classic arcade games, skeeball, and an interesting digital connect four version of basketball that I had never seen before. Sadly we did not get to check out the food in downtown’s Chinatown, but there’s always a next time!

Nature

Boston features great terrain and several trails for hiking. We hiked “The Fells” and even found some interesting mushrooms!

I Can’t wait to go back and spend another beautiful weekend in Boston. What are your favorite things to do and eat in Beantown?!
